RESUMO

Numerous studies have investigated the chemical composition and biological activities of essential oils from different Citrus species fruit peel, leaves and flowers. This paper aims to investigate the chemical composition, larvicidal and antileishmanial activities of essential oil from Citrus reticulata fruit peel (CR-EO). CR-EO was obtained by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger-type apparatus and its chemical composition was analyzed by GC-MS and GC-FID. Limonene (85.7%), ɣ-terpinene (6.7%) and myrcene (2.1%) were identified as its major components. CR-EO showed high activity against promastigote forms of Leishmania amazonensis (IC50 = 8.23 µg/mL). CR-EO also exhibited high larvicidal activity against third instar Aedes aegypti larvae at a lethal concentration (LC50 = 58.35 µg/mL) and 100% mortality at 150 µg/mL. This study suggests, for the first time, the potential use of CR-EO against this important mosquito-borne viral disease caused by the genus Aedes.


Numerosos estudos têm investigado a composição química e as atividades biológicas de óleos essenciais extraídos de cascas dos frutos, folhas e flores de diferentes espécies de Citrus. Este trabalho tem como objetivo investigar a composição química e as atividades larvicida e leishmanicida in vitro do óleo essencial das cascas dos frutos de Citrus reticulata (CR-EO). CR-EO foi obtido pela técnica de extração em aparelho Clevenger e sua composição química foi determinada por CG-EM e CG-DIC. Limoneno (85,7%), ɣ-terpineno (6,7%) and mirceno (2,1%) foram identificados como os constituintes majoritários. CR-EO mostrou alta atividade contra as formas promastigota de Leishmania amazonensis (CI50 = 8,23 µg/mL). CR-EO também exibiu alta atividade larvicida contra as larvas do terceiro estágio do Aedes aegypti com concentração letal (CL50 = 58,35 µg/mL) e mortalidade de 100% em 150 µg/mL. Este estudo sugere, pela primeira vez, o uso potencial de CR-EO contra esta importante doença viral transmitida por mosquitos do gênero Aedes.

The present study established the spectrum-effect relationship model of flavonoids in Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium(CRP) from 15 batches of Liujunzi Decoction and statistically analyzed the correlation between chemical peaks and efficacy to identify the main effective components. HPLC fingerprints of flavonoids in CRP from 15 batches of Liujunzi Decoction were established. HPLC analysis was carried out on the Venusil XBP C_(18)(L) column(4.6 mm×250 mm, 5 μm) at 30 ℃ with acetonitrile-water(containing 0.1% formic acid) as mobile phase for gradient elution, a flow rate of 1.0 mL·min~(-1), and detection wavelength of 300 nm to obtain chemical fingerprints. Additionally, the effects of flavonoids from CRP in 15 batches of Liujunzi Decoction on the content of GAS, MTL, and VIP, TFF3 mRNA expression, and percentage of CD3~+ T-cells of model rats with spleen deficiency were determined. The spectrum-effect relationship model was established by gray correlation analysis. The results showed that the main characteristic peaks with great contribution to the regulation of gastrointestinal tract were peak 16(vicenin-2), peak 63(sinensetin), peak 64(isosinensetin), peak 65(nobiletin), peak 67(3,5,6,7,8,3',4'-heptemthoxyflavone), peak 68(tangeretin), and peak 69(5-desmethylnobiletin). Therefore, there was a linear correlation between flavonoids from CRP in Liujunzi Decoction and the efficacy, and the medicinal effect was achieved by multi-component action. This study is expected to provide a new idea for exploring the material basis of the effect, i.e., regulating qi prior to replenishing qi, of CRP in Liujunzi Decoction.

Abstract The high prevalence of anxiety disorders associated with pharmacotherapy side effects have motivated the search for new pharmacological agents. Species from Citrus genus, such as Citrus limon (sicilian lemon), have been used in folk medicine as a potential therapy to minimize emotional disorders. In order to searching for new effective treatments with fewer side effects, the present study evaluated the anxiolytic mechanism of action and the hypnotic-sedative activity from the Citrus limon fruit's peels essential oil (CLEO). Adults male Swiss mice were submitted to barbiturate-induced sleep test; elevated plus-maze (EPM) and light-dark box (LDB) (evaluation of the mechanism of action); rotarod; and catalepsy tests. CLEO oral treatment decreased latency and increased the sleep total time; moreover it induced in animals an increased the number of entries and percentage of time spent into open arms of the EPM; an increased the number of transitions and the percentage of time into light compartment in the LDB; which were only antagonized by flumazenil pretreatment, with no injury at motor function. Thus, results suggest that CLEO treatment induced an anxiolytic behavior suggestively modulated by the benzodiazepine binding site of the GABAA receptor or by an increase of GABAergic neurotransmission, without cause impairment in the motor coordination.

The present study aimed to evaluate non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC) in sugarcane-based diets on rumen pH, and forage digestibility, and to describe NFC degradation curves. The study consisted of two trials. For the first trial, three rumen cannulated steers, BW of 350 ± 15 kg (mean ± SE), were assigned in a 3×3 Latin Square (LS) design. They were fed diets containing finely-ground (0.9 mm average particle size) corn (GC), steam-rolled corn (SRC), or pelleted citrus pulp (PCP). Each period had 14 d, with the first 12 for adaptation. The 13th d was for serial measurement of rumen pH, and the14th for rumen fluid collection and in vitro incubation for DM and NDF digestibility (IVDMD and IVNDFD) of bermudagrass hay (Hay), corn (CS), and sugarcane (SS) silages. In the second trial, rumen fluid of a cannulated bull, fed corn silage and a regular concentrate, was collected for in vitro digestion of NFC for multiple time points. The incubation results were used to adjust the NFC degradation curves, and calculate lag-time, feed fractions, and degradation rate. Data from first trial was analyzed in a 3×3 LS. The model for the digestibility parameters included fixed effects of forage (Feed), diets with NFC (Diet), and their interaction (Feed × Diet), and random effect of animal and period. The model for rumen pH included fixed effect of diet, time as repeated measures, animal and period as random effects. The significance was considered at probability ≤ 5% (α = 0.05). The NFC degradation curves were adjusted using the PROC NLIN procedure from SAS, and equation parameters compared using confidence intervals. There was a Diet × Time interaction on rumen pH (P = 0.04), where SRC decreased pH compared to PCP and GC diets at the time 6 h, only. There was no Feed × Diet interaction effect (P > 0.05) for any digestibility parameter. There was a Feed effect on both IVDMD and IVNDFD, either after 30 or 48 h incubation (P < 0.01). The CS had the greatest IVDMD, followed by SS and Hay, after 30 and 48 h of incubation. The CS had the greatest IVNDFD after 30 h, compared to SS and Hay. However, for IVNDFD after 48 h, CS presented the greatest mean, followed by SS and Hay. The rumen fluid from animals fed SRC decreased both IVDMD and IVNDFD (P < 0.05) of all roughages after 48 h. Results from the second trial showed that the PCP had lower Lag Time, B fraction and greater kd compared to both corn sources, and SRC had greater kd than GC. In conclusion, the SRC diet decreased rumen pH 6 h after feeding and, consequently, decreased fiber digestibility of the tropical forage sources evaluated. Although the PCP had lower lag time, and faster rate of degradation of B fraction, it did not negatively affect rumen pH or fiber digestibility of forage.(AU)


O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os carboidratos não-fibrosos (CNF) em dietas à base de cana-de-açúcar sobre o pH ruminal e digestibilidade da forragem, e descrever as curvas de degradação dos CNF. O estudo foi composto de dois ensaios. No primeiro, três novilhos canulados no rúmen, com peso vivo de 350 ± 15 kg (Média ± DP), foram alocados em um quadrado latino (QL) 3×3, e alimentados com dietas contendo: milho moído (MM, tamanho de partículas 0,9 mm), laminado a vapor (MLV) ou polpa cítrica peletizada (PCP). Cada período tinha 14 d, sendo os primeiros 12 para adaptação e o 13º para a medição seriada do pH e o 14º para a coleta de líquido ruminal e incubação in vitro para digestibilidade da MS e FDN (DIVMS e DIVFDN) de feno de bermudagrass (Feno) e silagens de milho (SM) e cana (SC). No segundo ensaio, coletou-se fluido ruminal de um touro canulado, alimentado com silagem de milho e concentrado padrão, para digestão in vitro dos CNF em vários tempos. Esses resultados foram utilizados para ajustar as curvas de degradação dos CNF e calcular o tempo de colonização, frações alimentares e taxa de degradação. Os resultados do primeiro ensaio foram analisados em um QL 3×3. O modelo dos parâmetros de digestibilidade incluiu efeito fixo de forragem (Alimento), dieta com CNF (Dieta) e interação (Alimento × Dieta), e efeito aleatório de animal e período. O modelo para pH incluiu efeito fixo de Dieta, Tempo como medida repetida, animal e período como aleatórios. Foi considerada a probabilidade significativa de ≤ 5% (α = 0,05). As curvas de degradação dos CNF foram ajustadas pelo PROC NLIN do SAS, e parâmetros de equação comparados por intervalo de confiança. Houve interação Dieta × Tempo no pH ruminal (P = 0,04), onde o MLV diminuiu o pH comparado com PCP e MM apenas no tempo 6 h. Não houve interação Alimento × Dieta (P > 0,05) para nenhum parâmetro de digestibilidade. Houve efeito de Alimento sobre a DIVMS e DIVFDN, após 30 e 48 h de incubação (P < 0,01). A SM teve a maior DIVMS, seguido por SC e Feno, após 30 e 48 h de incubação. A SM teve a maior DIVFDN após 30 h, comparado com SC e Feno. No entanto, para DIVFDN após 48 h, a SM teve maior média, seguida da SC e Feno. O fluido ruminal de animais alimentados com MLV diminuiu a DIVMS e DIVFDN (P < 0.05) de todas as forragens, após 48 h. Resultados do segundo ensaio mostram que PCP diminuiu o tempo de colonização, fração B e aumentou a kd comparado com os dois milhos, e MLV apresentou maior kd que o MM. Em conclusão, a dieta com MLV diminuiu o pH ruminal no tempo 6 h e, consequentemente, diminuiu a DIVFDN das forragens avaliadas. Embora PCP tenha apresentado menor tempo de colonização e maior taxa de degradação da fração B, não afetou negativamente o pH do rúmen nem a digestibilidade da fibra das forragens. (au)

Parkinson's disease (PD) is described as a neurological condition, resulting from continuous degeneration of dopaminergic neurons. Currently, most treatments for neurodegenerative diseases are palliative. In traditional Iranian medicine, Citrus aurantium flower extract is used to treat some neural diseases, such as sleep disorders and anxiety. The tendency towards the use of medicinal herbs for the treatment of diseases (eg, seizure) is growing. Accordingly, we evaluated the antioxidant effects of C. aurantium flowers and analyzed their protective effects against 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-mediated oxidative stress. In this study, 150 mM of 6-OHDA was used to induce cellular damage. Also, MTT assay was performed to analyze cellular viability. Fluorescence spectrophotometry was performed to measure the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and calcium levels. Based on the findings, 6-OHDA could reduce cell viability. We also analyzed the effects of C. aurantium against neurotoxicity. The intracellular levels of ROS and calcium greatly improved in cells exposed to 6-OHDA. SH-SY5Y cell incubation with C. aurantium (400 and 600 mg/mL) induced protective effects and decreased the biochemical markers of cell apoptosis. According to the findings, C. aurantium showed protective effects against neurotoxicity, caused by 6-OHDA; these protective properties were accompanied by antiapoptotic features. According to the findings, it seems that hydromethanolic C. aurantium extract can be used to prevent seizures.


La enfermedad de Parkinson (EP) se describe como una afección neurológica que resulta de la degeneración continua de las neuronas dopaminérgicas. Actualmente, la mayoría de los tratamientos para las enfermedades neurodegenerativas son paliativos. En la medicina tradicional iraní, el extracto de flor de Citrus aurantium se usa para tratar algunas enfermedades neurológicas, como los trastornos del sueño y la ansiedad. La tendencia hacia el uso de las medicinas para el tratamiento de enfermedades (por ejemplo, convulsiones) está creciendo. Por consiguiente, el objetivo de este trabajo consistió en evaluar los efectos antioxidantes de las flores de C. aurantium y analizar sus efectos protectores contra el estrés oxidativo mediado por la 6- hidroxidopamina (6-OHDA). En este estudio, se usó 150 mM de 6-OHDA para inducir daño celular. Además, se realizó un ensayo de MTT para analizar la viabilidad celular. La espectrofotometría de fluorescencia se realizó para medir las especies reactivas de oxígeno (ROS) intracelulares y los niveles de calcio. En base a los hallazgos, 6-OHDA podría reducir la viabilidad celular. También analizamos los efectos de C. aurantium contra la neurotoxicidad. Los niveles intracelulares de ROS y calcio se expandieron a las células expuestas a 6-OHDA. La incubación de células SH-SY5Y con C. aurantium (400 y 600 mg / ml) indujo efectos protectores y disminuyó los marcadores bioquímicos de la apoptosis celular. De acuerdo con los hallazgos, C. aurantium mostró efectos protectores contra la neurotoxicidad, causada por 6-OHDA; estas propiedades protectoras fueron acompañadas por características antiapoptóticas. Según los hallazgos, parece que el extracto hidrometanólico de C. aurantium se puede usar para prevenir las convulsiones.

The peel components and juice quality of three mandarin hybrids were investigated in this study. Peel components were extracted using the cold-press method and analyzed using GC-FID and GC-MS. Total soluble solids, total acid, pH value, ascorbic acid as well as density were determined in juice obtained from mandarin hybrids. Twenty-six, thirty-five and nineteen peel components were identified in Fortune, Robinson and Osceola respectively including: aldehydes, alcohols, esters, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and other components. The major components were limonene, γ-terpinene, (E)-ß-ocimene, ß-myrcene, sabinene, linalool and α-Pinene. Among the three scions examined, Fortune showed the highest content of aldehydes and Robinson showed the highest content of TSS. This study shows that scion has a profound influence on aldehyd and TSS that are important to quality improvement.


Los componentes de la cáscara y la calidad del jugo de tres híbridos de mandarina fueron investigados en este estudio. Los componentes de la cáscara fueron extraídos por el método de prensado en frío y se analizaron mediante GC-FID y GC-MS. el total de sólidos solubles, acidez total, pH, ácido ascórbico, así como la densidad se determinaron en el jugo obtenido a partir de híbridos de mandarina. Veintiséis, treinta y cinco y diecinueve componentes de la cáscara de Fortuna, Robinson y Osceola respectivamente fueron identificados, incluyendo: aldehídos, alcoholes, ésteres, monoterpenos, sesquiterpenos y otros componentes. Los componentes principales eran limoneno, γ-terpineno, (E) -ß-ocimeno, ß-mirceno, sabineno, linalool y α-pineno. Entre los tres vástagos examinados, Fortune mostró el mayor contenido de aldehídos y Robinson mostró el mayor contenido de SST. Este estudio muestra que el vástago tiene una profunda influencia en aldehído y SST que son importantes para mejorar la calidad.

Atualmente a obesidade tem sido uma doença de grande expansão na população. Dentre as alternativas terapêuticas, o uso de plantas com propriedade termogênica tem sido comumente adotado pela população. A Citrus aurantium L., conhecida como Laranja amarga tem sido uma alternativa para o emagrecimento, porém postula-se que seu uso possa acarretar danos toxicológicos ao fígado, taquicardia e aumento da pressão arterial. Objetivo: avaliar a variação ponderal, o consumo de ração e o perfil bioquímico lipídico. Metodologia: utilizou 20 camundongos suíços, fêmeas e adultas divididas em: Grupo Controle (n=10) tratadas com água e Grupo Laranja (n=10) tratadas com extrato aquoso da Laranja amarga na dosagem diária de 1,2g/dia. A administração foi feita por gavagem durante 30 dias. Ambos os grupos foram submetidos à natação, três vezes por semanas e pesados semanalmente. A ração consumida também foi mensurada diariamente. Após a eutanásia foi feita a coleta de sangue por punção cardíaca para os exames bioquímicos. Resultados: quanto à variação ponderal, os dois grupos apresentaram perda significativa (Grupo Controle: p=0,003/ Grupo Laranja: p=0,027) de peso, o que possivelmente foi proporcionado pela natação e não pelo extrato da planta (diferença entre os grupos controle e laranja não foi significativa, tendo como p=0,308). Não foram evidenciadas alterações no perfil lipídico e no consumo de ração de ambos os grupos. Conclusão: de acordo com os dados obtidos, o extrato aquoso Citrus aurantium L. não mostrou potencial termogênico e não alterou o perfil lipídico dos animais tratados por 30 dias...


Currently obesity has been a disease of great expansion in the population. Among the therapeutic alternatives, the use of plants with thermogenic property has been commonly adopted by population. The Citrus aurantium L., known as bitter orange has been an alternative to weight loss, however it is postulated that its use may cause toxicological liver damage, tachycardia and increased blood pressure. Objective: evaluate the changes in body weight, food intake and lipid biochemical profile. Methodology: 20 swiss mice, females and adults divided into: Control Group (n = 10) treated with water and Orange Group (n = 10) treated with aqueous extract of bitter orange in a daily dosage of 1.2g/day. The administration was by gavage for 30 days. Both groups were submitted to swimming three times per week and weighted weekly. Food consumption was also measured daily. After euthanasia, blood was collected by cardiac puncture for biochemical exams. Results: as for weighted variation, the two groups showed significant loss (Control Group: p = 0.003 / Orange Group: p = 0.027) in weight, which was possibly due to swimming and not by the plant extract (difference between the Control Group and Orange Group was not significant, with p = 0.308). No changes were observed in the lipid profile and food intake in both groups. Conclusion: according to data obtained, the aqueous extract Citrus aurantium L. did not show thermogenic potential and did not affect the lipid profile of the treated animals in 30 days...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Citrus limonum and Citrus aurantium essential oils (EOs) compared to 0.2% chlorhexidine (CHX) and 1% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on multi-species biofilms formed by Candida albicans, Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli. The biofilms were grown in acrylic disks immersed in broth, inoculated with microbial suspension (106 cells/mL) and incubated at 37°C / 48 h. After the biofilms were formed, they were exposed for 5 minutes to the solutions (n = 10): C. aurantium EO, C. limonum EO, 0.2% CHX, 1% NaOCl or sterile saline solution [0.9% sodium chloride (NaCl)]. Next, the discs were placed in sterile 0.9% NaCl and sonicated to disperse the biofilms. Tenfold serial dilutions were performed and the aliquots were seeded onto selective agar and incubated at 37°C / 48 h. Next, the number of colony-forming units per milliliter was counted and analyzed statistically (Tukey test, p ≤ 0.05). C. aurantium EO and NaOCl inhibited the growth of all microorganisms in multi-species biofilms. C. limonum EO promoted a 100% reduction of C. albicans and E. coli, and 49.3% of E. faecalis. CHX was less effective against C. albicans and E. coli, yielding a reduction of 68.8% and 86.7%, respectively. However, the reduction of E. faecalis using CHX (81.7%) was greater than that obtained using C. limonum EO. Both Citrus limonum and Citrus aurantium EOs are effective in controlling multi-species biofilms; the microbial reductions achieved by EOs were not only similar to those of NaOCl, but even higher than those achieved by CHX, in some cases.

Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris is considered to be one of the important target microorganisms in the quality control of acidic canned foods. There is an urgent need to develop a suitable method for inhibiting or controlling the germination and outgrowth of A.acidoterrestris in acidic drinks. The aim of this work was to evaluate the chemicals used in the lemon industry (sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate), and lemon essential oil as a natural compound, against a strain of A.acidoterrestris in MEB medium and in lemon juice concentrate. The results pointed out that sodium benzoate (500-1000-2000 ppm) and lemon essential oil (0.08- 0.12- 0.16%) completely inhibited the germination of A. acidoterrestris spores in MEB medium and LJC for 11 days. Potassium sorbate (600-1200 ppm) was more effective to inhibit the growth of the microbial target in lemon juice than in MEB medium. The effect of sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate and essential oil was sporostatic in MEB and LJC as they did not affect spore viability.

Introducción: los cítricos constituyen un género de plantas rico en contenido de fenoles y flavonoides, metabolitos secundarios que debido a su efecto antioxidante y baja toxicidad, han recibido en los últimos años mucha atención como potenciales fármacos. Objetivos: determinar la actividad antioxidante in vitro y la toxicidad frente a Artemia salina L. de extractos hidroalcohólicos de hojas de Citrus aurantium L. var. sinensis L.; Citrus aurantium L.; Citrus aurantiifolia (Christm.) Swingle; Citrus latifolia (Tanaka ex Yu. Tanaka) Tanaka; Citrus reticulata Blanco (Rutaceae). Métodos: los extractos etanólicos y metanólicos se obtuvieron mediante extracción por ultrasonido y se caracterizaron fitoquímicamente; se determinó la concentración total de fenoles y flavonoides. La actividad antioxidante se halló mediante la capacidad atrapadora de radicales libre y el poder reductor. La toxicidad se evaluó mediante el bioensayo de letalidad sobre Artemia salina. Resultados: en los extractos etanólicos se encontró mayor presencia de compuestos químicos que en los extractos metanólicos. La mayor concentración de fenoles totales se obtuvo en el extracto metanólico de Citrus reticulata y de flavonoides totales en el extracto etanólico de Citrus aurantifolia y Citrus reticulata, en ambos solventes. Todos los extractos mostraron actividad antioxidante mediante las 2 pruebas ensayadas. Los extractos presentaron toxicidad moderada frente Artemia salina, siendo el extracto metanólico de Citrus latifolia el de menor toxicidad (LC50 = 464,24 µg/mL). Conclusiones: se evidenció la presencia de fenoles y clases de flavonoides, la actividad antioxidante de los extractos hidroalcohólicos de Citrus spp. y su moderada toxicidad frente a Artemia salina


Introduction: citrus fruits constitute an important source of flavonoids and phenols. The latter are secondary metabolites extensively studied in the last few years on account of their antioxidant effect and low toxicity and of their potentialities as pharmaceuticals. Objectives: to determine the in vitro antioxidant activity and toxicity against Artemia salina of hydroalcoholic extracts obtained from leaves of Citrus aurantium L. var. sinensis L.; Citrus aurantium L.; Citrus aurantiifolia (Christm.) Swingle; Citrus latifolia (Tanaka ex Yu. Tanaka) Tanaka, Citrus reticulata Blanco (Rutaceae). Methods: the ethanol and methanol extracts were obtained by ultrasound-assisted extraction method, and characterized using phytochemistry assays; the total amount of phenols and flavonoids was also determined. The antioxidant activity was estimated by the free radical scavenging activity and reducing power. The toxicity of the extracts was evaluated against Artemia salina. Results: the amount of chemical compounds was higher in ethanol than in methanol extracts. The highest concentration of total phenols was found in methanol extract from Citrus reticulate where that of total flavonoids was seen in the ethanolic extracts from Citrus aurantiifolia and Citrus reticulate, in both solvents. The extracts showed antioxidant activity after the two tests. All the extracts presented moderate toxicity against Artemia salina, being the methanol extract from Citrus latifolia the least toxic (LC50= 464.24 µg/mL). Conclusions: this study showed the existence of phenols and flavonoids, the antioxidant activity of hydroalcoholic extracts from Citrus spp. leaves and their moderate toxicity against Artemia salina

In the present study, the essential oils from Eucalyptus globulus Labill., Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck and Citrus limon L. were analysed by GC-MS (gas chromatography–mass spectrometry) and evaluated for their toxic effects on Sternechus subsignatus and Rhyssomatus subtilis, two important pest of soybean in South America. Contact toxicity assayed by impregnation on filter paper discs showed that these oils caused significant mortality of the test insects (100 percent of mortality at 5 uL/cm2). Eucalyptus oil (98.9 percent of 1,8-cineole) had the greatest contact toxicity (LD50 = 0.40 and 0.84 uL/cm2 for S. pinguis and R. subtilis, respectively), whereas orange (87.6 percent of limonene) and lemon oils (62.5 and 12.6 percent of limonenen and beta pinene, respectively) were less toxic (LD50 > 1 uL/cm2 for both insects). All the responses were found dose-dependent. Rhyssomatus subtilis was more resistant than Sternechus pinguis to the toxicity of the essential oils studied.


En el presente estudio se analizaron por CG-EM (cromatografía de gases-espectrometría de masas) los aceites esenciales de eucalipto (Eucalyptus globulus Labill.), naranja (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) y limón (Citrus limon L) y se evaluaron sus efectos tóxicos contra dos especies de plagas importantes para la soja en Sud América: Sternechus subsignatus y Rhyssomatus subtilis. La toxicidad por contacto, ensayada por discos de papel de filtro impregnados, mostró que estos aceites causaron una mortalidad significativa de los insectos testeados (100 por ciento de mortalidad a 5 uL/cm2). El aceite de eucalipto (98.9 por ciento de 1,8-cineol) presentó la mayor toxicidad por contacto (LD50 = 0.40 y 0.84 uL/cm2 para S. pinguis y R. subtilis, respectivamente), mientras que el aceite de naranja (87.6 por ciento de limoneno) y el de limón (62.5 y 12.6 por ciento de limoneno y beta pineno, respectivamente) fueron menos tóxicos (LD50 > 1 uL/cm2 para ambos insectos). Todas las respuestas fueron dosis dependiente. Rhyssomatus subtilis fue más resistente que Sternechus pinguis a la toxicidad de los aceites esenciales estudiados.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe X-linked recessive disorder characterized by the progressive loss of muscular strength. Mdx mutant mice show a marked deficiency in dystrophin, which was related to muscle membrane stability. The aim of this study was to verify the possible protective anti-inflammatory effect of citrus oil on mdx muscle fibers. Thus, adult male and female mdx mice (014/06-CEEA) were divided into control and citrus-treated. After 60 days of treatment, one ml of blood was collected for creatine kinase (CK) test. Diaphragm, sternomastoideus, anterior tibial and gastrocnemius muscles were removed and processed according to histological routine methods. The observed alterations indicate a direct effect of citrus. Recent studies have improved the diagnosis of muscular diseases but with no definitions of efficient treatments. Intervention with several therapies is important to many patients presenting muscular dystrophy, which enables them to live longer and be more active, while there is no development of gene therapies.


La distrofia muscular de Duchenne (DMD) es una enfermedad grave ligada al cromosoma X, trastorno recesivo que se caracteriza por la pérdida progresiva de fuerza muscular. Mdx ratones mutantes muestran una marcada deficiencia en la distrofina, que está relacionada con la estabilidad de la membrana muscular. El objetivo de este estudio fue comprobar el posible efecto protector, antiinflamatorio del aceite de cítricos en las fibras musculares mdx. Los ratones mdx adultos machos y hembras (014/06-CEEA) se dividieron en control y cítricos tratados. Después de 60 días de tratamiento, un ml de sangre fue recogida para cuantificar la creatina quinasa (CK) de prueba. Fueron retirados y procesados los músculos diafragma, esternomastoideo, tibial anterior y gastrocnemio de acuerdo con los métodos de rutina histológica. Las alteraciones observadas indican un efecto directo de los cítricos. Estudios recientes han mejorado el diagnóstico de enfermedades musculares, pero sin definiciones de tratamientos eficaces. Intervención con varias terapias es importante para muchos pacientes que presentan distrofia muscular, lo que les permite vivir más y ser más activos, mientras no exista desarrollo de terapias génicas.

The seizures can produce neuronal damage in several brain structures. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential neuroprotective effect of essential oil of Citrus limon (EOCL) on the histopathological changes observed in the hippocampus and striatum of mice after seizures induced by pilocarpine. Adult Swiss mice were 2 months old. The animals were divided into four groups. The first group was treated with 0.05 percent Tween 80 (control group) and the second with pilocarpine (400 mg/kg group P400). The third and fourth group were treated with EOCL (150 mg/kg) and 30 min after received P400 (P400 +/- EOCL group) or 0.05 percent Tween 80, respectively. After treatment, all groups were observed for 24 h, then sacrificed and their brains removed for histopathological analysis. The group P400, presented with seizures that progressed to status epilepticus in 75 percent of animals. Pretreatment with OECL produced a 25 percent reduction in this index. Groups P400 and P400 + EOCL showed 83.33 percent and 25 percent of animals with brain damage in the hippocampus, respectively. In the striatum of group P400 was a compromise of 75 percent. In turn, in the striatal region of group EOCL P400 + was seen a decrease of 58.34 percent in this neuronal damage. The seizures induced by pilocarpine are installed by the cholinergic system and produce brain damage. According to our results we suggest that the EOCL may modulate epileptogenesis and promote neuroprotective effects during the seizures in the model investigated.


As convulsões podem produzir danos neuronais em diversas estruturas cerebrais. O objetivo desse estudo foi investigar o potencial efeito neuroprotetor do óleo essencial de Citrus limon (OECL) nas alterações histopatológicas observadas no hipocampo e corpo estriado de camundongos após convulsão induzida por pilocarpina. Foram utilizados camundongos Swiss adultos com 2 meses de idade. Os animais foram divididos em 4 grupos. O primeiro grupo foi tratado com Tween 80 0,05 por cento (grupo controle) e o segundo com pilocarpina (400 mg/kg, grupo P400). Já o terceiro e quarto grupo foram tratados com OECL (150 mg/kg), e 30 min depois receberam P400 (grupo OECL + P400) ou Tween 80 0,05 por cento 0.9 por cento (grupo OECL), respectivamente. Após os tratamentos, todos os grupos foram observados durante 24 h e em seguida sacrificados e seus cérebros removidos para as análises histopatológicas. O grupo P400, apresentou convulsões que progrediram para o estado epiléptico em 75 por cento dos animais. O pré-tratamento com OECL produziu uma redução de 25 por cento nesse índice. Os grupos P400 e OECL + P400 apresentaram 83,33 por cento e 25 por cento de animais com lesão cerebral no hipocampo, respectivamente. No corpo estriado dos animais do grupo P400 houve um comprometimento de 75 por cento. Por sua vez, na região estriatal dos animais do grupo OECL + P400 foi visto uma redução de 58,34 por cento nesse comprometimento. As convulsões induzidas pela pilocarpina são instaladas pelo sistema colinérgico e produzem dano cerebral. De acordo com nossos resultados podemos sugerir que o OECL pode modular a epileptogênese e promover ação neuroprotetora durante as convulsões no modelo investigado.

Treatment of supraventricular arrhythmia includes a wide range of medical interventions. Herbal remedies are suitable alternatives to synthetic drugs due to their availability, minimal side effects and lower price. Pharmacological studies and traditional medical literature point to the cardiovascular effects of Citrus aurantium L. (Rutaceae) in many instances. In the present study we used isolated perfused AV-node of rabbit as an experimental model to determine the effect of various concentrations of essential oil of C. aurantium (0.1-0.3 v/v) on the nodal conduction time and refractoriness of an isolated rabbit AV-nodal preparations. Selective stimulation protocols were used to independently quantify AV nodal recovery, facilitation and fatigue in 18 rabbits. Our results showed concentration-dependent and rate-independent suppressive effects of essence of C. aurantium on the Wenchebach cycle length (WBCL), AV Conduction Time (AVCT) and effective and functional refractory periods (ERP & FRP). Functional properties such as facilitation and fatigue were significantly increased by this plant. Citrus aurantium plays a protective role against the toxic effects of ouabaine by increasing AV nodal conduction time and refractoriness. The above results indicated differential effects of C. aurantium on slow and fast pathways, with a dominant role on fast pathways. This research has explained the protective role of C. aurantium on ouabaine toxicity. All results indicated the potential anti-arrhythmic effects of C. aurantium in treating supraventricular tachyarrhythmia.


El tratamiento de la arritmia supraventricular incluye una amplia gama de intervenciones médicas. Los remedios herbarios son alternativas adecuadas a las drogas sintéticas debido a su disponibilidad, con escasos efectos secundarios y bajo precio. Estudios farmacológicos y la literatura médica tradicional señalan los efectos cardiovasculares de Citrus aurantium L. (Rutaceae) en muchos casos. En el presente estudio se usaron aislados perfundidos del nodo AV de conejo como modelo experimental para determinar el efecto de diferentes concentraciones de aceite esencial de C. aurantium (0,1-0,3 v/v) sobre en el tiempo de conducción nodal y refractariedad. Un protocolo de estimulación selectiva se utilizó para cuantificar de forma independiente la recuperación, la facilitación y la fatiga del nodo AV en 18 conejos. Nuestros resultados muestran efectos supresores dependientes de la concentración e independiente de la velocidad de la esencia de C. aurantium sobre la duración del ciclo Wenchebach (WBCL), tiempo de conducción AV (AVTC) y períodos refractarios eficaz y funcional (PRE y PRF). Propiedades funcionales tales como la facilitación y la fatiga se incrementaron de manera significativa por esta planta. La Citrus aurantium juega un papel protector contra los efectos tóxicos de ouabaína al incrementar el tiempo de conducción AV nodal y la refractariedad. Los resultados indican efectos diferenciales de C. aurantium sobre las vías lentas y rápidas, con un papel dominante en las vías rápidas. Esta investigación ha explicado el papel protector de C. aurantium sobre la toxicidad ouabaine. Todos los resultados indican los posibles efectos anti-arrítmicos de C. aurantium en el tratamiento de taquiarritmias supraventriculares.

It is well known that citrus plants that have been infected by Xylella fastidiosa display nutritional deficiencies, probably caused by production of extracellular polymers by the bacteria that block normal nutrient flow through the xylem. The aim of this work was to study the mineral composition of specific foliar areas in different stages of infection in citrus. Thus, the concentrations of macro and micronutrients in leaves of citrus infected by X. fastidiosa were measured. Samples from four infected citrus orchards in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, were respectively collected from Santa Rita do Passa Quatro, Neves Paulista, Gavião Peixoto and Paraíso counties. The presence of X. fastidiosa in leaves was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using specific PCR primers. To understand the variation in leaf-nutrient content in citrus plants, we used foliar nutrient values from control (non-symptomatic) plants as a reference. Chemometric analysis showed that the deficiency of P and K in symptomatic trees for all orchards and high concentrations of Fe, Mn and Zn were observed in chlorotic areas, although other studies revealed deficiency of zinc in leaves. This is the first report showing that a correlation between chlorotic citrus leaf and higher concentrations of Fe, Mn and Zn are observed when infected and healthy plants were compared.


Já é bem conhecido que cultivares cítricas que foram infectadas pela bactéria Xylella fastidiosa apresentam deficiências nutricionais devido à produção de polímero extracelular por esta bactéria, o qual bloqueia o fluxo normal de nutriente pelo xilema. O objetivo deste trabalho foi o de estudar a composição mineral em áreas foliares específicas em diferentes fases de infecção na planta. Assim, as concentrações de macro e micronutrientes em folhas de citros infectados por X. fastidiosa foram quantificadas. Foram coletadas amostras de quatro pomares cítricos infectados localizados em: Santa Rita do Passa Quatro, Neves Paulista, Gavião Peixoto e Paraíso, no Estado de São Paulo. A presença de X. fastidiosa em folhas foi confirmada através de reação da polimerase em cadeia (PCR) usando iniciadores específicos. Para entender a variação no conteúdo de nutriente foliar em plantas cítricas, utilizou-se de valores de nutrientes foliares de plantas não sintomáticas (controle) como referência. A análise quimiométrica mostrou que a deficiência de P e K em plantas sintomáticas e concentrações altas de Fe, Mn e Zn foram presentes em áreas foliares cloróticas, embora outros estudos mostrem a deficiência de zinco em folhas. Este é o primeiro relato indicando que uma correlação entre folhas cítricas cloróticas e elevadas concentrações de Fe, Mn e Zn foi observada quando plantas infectadas e saudáveis foram comparadas.

El virus de la tristeza de los cítricos (CTV) es perjudicial para la citricultura y causa la enfermedad llamada tristeza de los cítricos. Infecta las especies del género Citrus ocasionando la muerte de millones de árboles. Los síntomas son decaimiento rápido (QD) y acanalamiento de tallo (SP). En el trabajo se diagnosticó molecular y serológicamente al CTV en aislados provenientes de Citrus aurantifolia o Lima Tahití (LT) y Citrus madurensis (Lour) o Calamondino (Ca), y se realizaron estudios preliminares de detección viral por medio de microscopía óptica e hibridación in situ. Se utilizó IC-RT-PCR e inmunoimpresión de tejido (IMI) expuesto a los anticuerpos monoclonales 3DF1+3CA5, y con el anticuerpo discriminante MCA 13 con técnica de Enzyme Linked Inmunossorbent Assay Doble Sándwich (Elisa-DAS). La detección por microscopía se realizó sobre secciones de pecíolo de LT y C que se tiñeron con Azure A, y con acetato de uranilo y citrato de plomo. Para la hibridación in situ se empleó una sonda marcada con digoxigenina dirigida hacia el gen de la proteína mayor de la cápside. Los resultados de IC-RT-PCR, IMI y Elisa fueron positivos para LT y C, indicando la presencia de variantes virales de tipo severo. Con microscopía de luz se detectaron inclusiones citoplasmáticas en las células acompañantes y del floema, confirmado con IMI y por hibridación in situ. Se visualizaron inclusiones de partículas virales en el tejido vegetal con microscopía electrónica con cambios en la ultraestructura celular como presencia de grandes vacuolas propias de la infección viral. Este trabajo integra distintas técnicas diagnósticas sobre dos especies cítricas exóticas.


Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) is deleterious for citriculture and causes citrus tristeza disease. CTV infects all citrus species thereby causing the death of millions of trees. Its main symptoms are quick decline (QD) and stem pitting (SP). Serological, molecular and microscopy techniques were used in this work for diagnosing CTV in Citrus aurantifolia or Tahiti Lime (Citrus latifolia Tanaka) (TL) and Citrus madurensis (Lour) or Calamondin (Ca) isolates. Petioles were tissue printed (IMI) and exposed to 3DF1+3CA5 monoclonal antibodies; they were then ELISA buffer extracted and exposed to a discriminant MCA 13 monoclonal antibody in a double-antibody sandwich indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DASI-ELISA). Immunocapture reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (IC-RT-PCR) amplification, using specific major coat protein gene (CPG) primers, was used on the ELISA buffer extracts as template. Optical and electron microscopy were used for detection on transversal sections of petiole and stained with azure A, uranyl acetate or lead citrate. Digoxygenin-labelled major CPG CTV probes were used for in situ hybridisation of petioles printing. All IC-RT-PCR, IMI and ELISA results were positive for both LT and C, indicating the presence of severe viral variants. Light microscopy cytoplasm inclusions were detected in the phloem and accompanying cells, confirmed by IMI and in situ hybridisation. Electron microscopy analysis revealed cellular abnormalities with changes in ultrastructure and the presence of big vacuoles which are characteristic of cytoplasmic viral infection. This is the first work integrating all available diagnostic techniques on these two exotic citric species.

Approximately 1 million tons of Agave tequilana plants are processed annually by the Mexican Tequila industry generating vast amounts of agricultural waste. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential use of Agave tequilana waste as substrate for the production of commercially important enzymes. Two strains of Aspergillus niger (CH-A-2010 and CH-A-2016), isolated from agave fields, were found to grow and propagate in submerged cultures using Agave tequilana waste as substrate. Isolates showed simultaneous extracellular inulinase, xylanase, pectinase, and cellulase activities. Aspergillus CH-A-2010 showed the highest production of inulinase activity (1.48 U/ml), whereas Aspergillus niger CH-A-2016 produced the highest xylanase (1.52 U/ml) and endo-pectinase (2.7U/ml) activities. In both cases production of enzyme activities was significantly higher on Agave tequilana waste than that observed on lemon peel and specific polymeric carbohydrates. Enzymatic hydrolysis of raw A. tequilana stems and leaves, by enzymes secreted by the isolates yielded maximum concentrations of reducing sugars of 28.2 g/l, and 9.9 g/l respectively. In conclusion, Agave tequilana waste can be utilized as substrate for the production of important biotechnological enzymes.

The patient's diet has been considered an important etiological factor of dentin hypersensitivity. The frequent ingestion of acidic substances can promote the loss of dental structure or remove the smear layer. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the degree of smear layer removal and dentinal tubules exposure by different natural orange juices. Extracted human teeth were submitted to manual scaling in order to develop the smear layer. Seventy dentin samples were obtained and distributed into the following groups: Control, lime orange, lime, valência orange, navel orange, mandarin, and tangerine. Each group included 2 methods of application: Topical and topical + friction. After preparation for SEM analysis, photomicrographs were assessed by a blind calibrated examiner using an index system. The Kruskal-Wallis test indicated a significant influence of the orange juices on smear layer removal. Significant difference was observed between navel orange, valência orange, mandarin and the control group (p < 0.05). These orange juices resulted in greater removal of the smear layer and greater opening of dentinal tubules. The comparison between the application methods for each group using the Mann-Whitney test showed that friction increased smear layer removal significantly only for lime orange and lime. The data suggest that certain natural orange juices are more effective in terms of smear layer removal and dentinal tubules exposure than others.

Antibacterial and antifungal properties of wax and hexane extracts of Citrus spp. peels were tested using bioautographic and microdilution techniques against three plant pathogenic fungi (Penicillium digitatum, Curvularia sp., and Colletotrichum sp.), two human pathogens (Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Microsporum canis), and two opportunistic bacteria (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus). Two polymethoxylated flavonoids and a coumarin derivative, were isolated and identified from peel extracts, which presented antimicrobial activity especially against M. canis and T. mentagrophytes: 4',5,6,7,8-pentamethoxyflavone (tangeritin) and 3',4',5,6,7,8-hexamethoxyflavone (nobiletin) from C. reticulata; and 6,7-dimethoxycoumarin (also known as escoparone, scoparone or scoparin) from C. limon.

Seven commercial essential oils extracted from the plant species Boesenbergia rotunda (L.) Mansf., Citrus hystrix DC., Curcuma longa L., Litsea cubeba (Lour.) Pers., Piper nigrum L., Psidium guajava L. and Zingiber officinale Roscoe, and naphthalene as a control, were evaluated for repellent activity against the three cockroach species Periplaneta americana (L.), Blattella germanica (L.) and Neostylopyga rhombifolia (Stoll) under laboratory conditions. The essential oil derived from Citrus hystrix showed the best repellency over other candidate essential oils and naphthalene. The essential oil of Citrus hystrix exhibited complete repellency (100%) against P. americana and B. germanica, and also showed the highest repellency (among the essential oils tested) of about 87.5% against N. rhombifolia under laboratory conditions. In the field, Citrus hystrix essential oil formulated as a 20% active ingredient in ethanol and some additives provided satisfactory repellency of up to 86% reduction in cockroaches, mostly P. americana and N. rhombifolia with a residual effect lasting a week after treatment. Citrus hystrix essential oil has good potential for being used as a cockroach repellent. Further improvements in efficacy and residual activity may be realized with appropriate formulations.
